What Thanksgiving Means to Us at Grace, of the  Lutheran Church Missouri Synod

For many, Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday centered around family, football, and a great meal. But if you’ve ever wondered why churches—especially Lutheran churches—make such a big deal out of it, here is a peek into what this day means to us, and why you are always welcome to pull up a chair.

1. We celebrate "First Article" blessings (The physical stuff)

In the Lutheran tradition, we talk a lot about what Martin Luther called the "First Article" of the Apostles' Creed. Put simply, this is the belief that everything good in our physical world comes from a loving Creator.

  • Our food, our homes, our families, and even our clothes are viewed as daily gifts from God.
  • We don’t take credit for the harvest or our successes; instead, we pause to say, "Thank you for taking care of my practical, everyday needs."

2. Gratitude shifts our focus from "what we lack" to "what we have"

It is easy to get caught up in the stress of daily life, keeping track of everything we don’t have or everything that goes wrong. Thanksgiving is our intentional pit-stop to change our perspective. When we gather as a community, we remind each other of the good things in our lives. It grounds us and brings a sense of peace that is hard to find on our own.

3. It's about a bigger thank-you (The spiritual stuff)

While we are deeply grateful for a warm meal and good company, Lutherans also use Thanksgiving to express gratitude for something even bigger: unconditional love and forgiveness. We believe that God doesn't just care about our growling stomachs; He cares about our hearts. We give thanks for Jesus, who brings hope, healing, and a fresh start to anyone who asks, no matter their background or past mistakes.

4. Community means there is always room for one more

You don’t need to have your life all figured out, you don't need to know any hymns, and you don’t even have to be sure what you believe to join us. For us, Thanksgiving isn't an exclusive club event. It’s a family table. If you don't have a place to go, or if you are simply looking for a meaningful way to spend the holiday, our doors are open to you.
